Mount Fuji

According to Shinto mythology, Konohanasakuya-hime is the goddess of Mount Fuji, and the Asama Shrine is built on the slopes of the mountain to prevent the volcano from erupting. The Fuji-kô societies that emerged in the Edo period (1603-1867) still exist today. They venerate the mountain as a female deity and encourage their members to climb it in order to be reborn purified.
